The gallery and its setting
The gallery sits within the Cittadella in Assisi’s historic centre, close to the Abbey of San Pietro. The Pro Civitate Christiana association was founded in Assisi in 1939 by Don Giovanni Rossi, and construction of the Cittadella Cristiana began in 1951. The gallery reopened to the public in 2005.
Its location also places it a few minutes’ walk from Piazza del Comune and the Basilicas of San Francesco and Santa Chiara. That makes the gallery easy to consider alongside a walk through the historic centre, though the visit itself is arranged as a guided experience.

What visitors may see
The collection comprises approximately 2,500 contemporary paintings, sculptures and graphic works by approximately 700 artists. The Ministry of Culture names artists represented in the holdings including Giorgio de Chirico, Fortunato Depero, Carlo Carrà, Ottone Rosai, Arturo Tozzi, Gino Menzio, Aligi Sassu, Pericle Fazzini, Fausto Pirandello, Emilio Greco and William Congdon.
Congdon has an entire section dedicated to his work. Other holdings include Afro-Asian art, medals, small bronzes, stained-glass windows and mosaics. A distinctive part of the collection is the complete series of 58 Miserere engravings by Georges Rouault.
The subject “Gesù Divino Lavoratore” was proposed to artists as a prompt to reflect on Jesus’s shared experience of everyday life. The range of works and themes gives the gallery a broader scope than a collection centred on a single medium.
